Heart murmur results and resuming application

Post by joshd1982 »

I got deferred from ADSC around 6 weeks ago with a heart murmur. I had a bit of a crisis go on around the time of my hospital appointments and cancelled two of them last minute. I didn't get the impression it was a problem at all until my AFCO called and said I was getting deferred for 2 years unless I could provide a good reason! I think I did and I got my 3rd appointment

I've just had my ECG and ultrasound and the specialist said alls good in the hood. I rang my AFCO the following morning and told them the result, I was told my afco date would depend on what 'they' said.

I'm just wondering if my ADSC date will be delayed because of the kerfuffle with the ECG appointment? Can they still defer me even though I've had the appointment?

The army is a rough tough life and they can't afford to take any one whose health could be suspect

Thanks for the response.

I understand that the Army will place a lot of phyical demands on the recruit. But I had a consultation after my scans and got the all clear. I passed all the other medical tests, as far as I know. But can they still defer me? or delay my application because I missed the appointments?

I doubt anyone can answer to be honest, it's just more waiting that does my swede in!

It's possible that they may defer you because the crisis that you had (and I won't ask what it was because it isn't relevant in this instance) made you act in a way that could call into question your commitment to joining up. On the other hand, they may not.
Like you say, we probably can't really answer this. Do the careers office know about the crisis, and exactly why you cancelled those appointments? If not, it could be worth explaining, so that they know it wasn't because you either got cold feet or couldn't be bothered. In hindsight it would have been better to keep them informed at the time, but you probably know thhat now, and what's done is done.
I would have a plan B just in case, but try and think positive. Even if you do get deferred, it's not a no, and frustrating as it is, you can use the time to get a bit more life experience, earn a bit more money, do some charity work etc. cos you can be darn sure they'll want to know what you did with your time!
You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.

Got my ADSC date - 12th of Jan! all I have to do now is pass the spiro test!

For anyone who cares/in a similar situation, it took a week for my report to go from the hospital to my careers office and for them to give me a date.

Cheers for responses!
