More British Soldiers died from disease than from enemy action, this was the first war when the government offered the troops an inoculation against some of the killer diseases. Many of the troops turned down the chance to have this jab through lack of knowledge and paid the the penalty for not having it. The American Government watched this experiment closely and they made it compulsory when they started to give them out.
