Medical Joining Query

Post by sgx-saint »

Hey All.

This question has probably been asked thousands of times, and I apologise for covering old ground.

I have mild eczema, but have never had any significant problems with it throughout my life.

I have been to the doctor about it twice only in my life. He gave me some cream and it healed in a couple of days.

I know if I was applying to the Army this would be a possible barr to entry and may even be turned down immediatly or referred to a specialist.

However what is the case in the Navy? .... I have a friend who also has mild eczema, however his skin is complete clear and spotless and he passed his medical and is serving in the Royal Navy now.

My skin is also healthy and fine.....would I be automatically rejected or would it depend on where I served etc ?

Thanks in Advance!

I have just dug up a booklet i recieved when i applied for Royal Navy and i noticed it had the following statement :

The following conditions make a person unsuitable for enlistment

Skin problems: Malignant Melanoma or skin cancer within 2 years. Active skin disease (eg. eczema and windspread psoriasis)

-----

Problem is it does not tell you if it is only little and not windspread then they will allow enlistment, your best bet is to ask your AFCO.

Hey.

I have spoken to the AFCO, and they are vague in there response to my questions.

They state that active eczema normally is a barr to entry, however people have entered the armed forces sucessfully with having eczema.

Im assuming there is lots of variables involved ?

What about getting it cleared up with cream and asking for a letter from your local GP? You could then show them that, maybe that could help it swing your way.

Someone I knew applied for the RA, but was denied because of his eczema. They told him to sort it out come back after 6months, which he did, they gave him the once over and penciled him to start in another 6 months time.

Good luck

Hey. Thanks for replies.

I dont have any eczema on my body at all, Ive been free for many years.

Apart from one recent patch on my face which I got some cream for and it cleared up quickly.

Im sure I could get a letter from my GP clearing me for service, but as the AFCO said .... that doesnt necessirly mean anything to there medical board.
