One N@tion I agologise for my cruddy answer above. If you want to read about the formation of the army commando units and the Marine Commando units during WWII I would recommend:
1. Commandos: the inside story of Britain's most elite fighting force by John Parker. This goes through all the major ops of the cdos. and is also a good read.
2. True Stories of the SBS by Robin Hunter goes into good detail about the original units that formed the modern day SBS including COPP, RMBPD, X-craft, LCOCU, the charioteers, and SSRF. It does go through some later ops although it is mainly focused 1940-'53.

When the Commando Units were formed during WWII they allocated numbers to the Army Commandos from 1 to 39, and to the Royal Marines Commandos from 40 up-wards.
Ranks are posted to whichever unit the Corps sees fit, but you can volunteer for a particular unit and hope for the best.
45 Commando specialises in Arctic warfare, although all units are capable of serving 'up North'.

not sure where i'm supposed to post this so i'll try here first. my dad served with 79 (Kirkee) Commando Battery Royal Artillery and also 29 commando regiment RA and i'm looking for people who served with him in aden in 1966 and anyone who knew him.He died when i was a child and i don't know much about him so am trying to find people who knew him hoping that they can shed some light on him as a soldier and a person. his name was Richard Burrows he was from barnsley in south yorkshire. Any help would be much appreciated.
