Application unsuccessful due to LASIK eye surgery.

Post by HamandJam »

Hi all.

I've just received a letter saying my application has been unsuccessful ( I sent my RG8 off on the 19th of March and received the letter yesterday ). Reason is that I had LASIK done in August 2010 and, because the vision in my right eye was not of the same standard as my left eye I had to have a small enhancement done to my right eye in August 2011. The letter states that

You may reapply when you meet the following criteria:

1. The pre-operatively refractive error was not more than +6.00 or -6.00 dioptre (spherical equivalent) in either eye, and;

2. The best spectacle corrected visual acuity pre-operatively was 6/9 or better in each eye, and;

3. At least 12 months have elapsed since the date of the last surgery or enhancement procedure, and;

4. There have been no significant visual side effects secondary to the surgery affecting daily activities or night vision and;

5. Refraction is stable, as defined by two refractions performed on each eye at least 6 months apart, with no more than 0.50
dioptre difference in the spherical equivalent of either eye, and;

6. Specialist visual function testing has been carried out with satisfactory results at least 12 months following surgery,
including assessment of refraction, symmetry of visual acuity, high and low contrast sensitivity ( with and without glare
sources), astigmatism, glare, corneal clarity, masked mild hypermetropia and night vision.

These facts need to be confirmed by relevant health professionals and in addition please provide complete details of the nature the small enhancement to your right eye that was performed in August 2011.

How do I go about appealing? What documents would I need to provide? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't appeal against the standards, as they are the laid down requirements.

Sorry I should of been clearer. I do meet the necessary requirements, but I didn't provide enough info with my RG8. I've been to Moorfields eye hospital to see a specialist and he is going to write me a letter. The only problem is he is unsure how to prove criteria number 6, he has no clue how to test for high and low contrast sensitivity or night vision. If anybody knows what tests I need done or a recommended specialist to see please let me know.
