RMC / Joining

Post by Skanza »

Hi there,
right well first a little introduction.

I am 16 years of age, and have a dual british citizenship. (I hold a British and a Norwegian Passport) Currently I am living in the middle-east, and have never lived in the UK.

Anyway, to start this off,

Is it true that apparently you have to live in the United Kingdom for 3 years prior to joining up with the RMC? Is this correct or have I been falsley informed?

Another question would be, regarding the aircrews of RMC.

I know that if you join the RMC and do the POC after a few years you can select a Specialisation course, and within that list 'Aircrew' is a part of it.
Does this include piloting fast jets and/or helicopters (Lynx, Sea King)?

Ideally what I'd love is to be able to do that, but will I have to join the Air Fleet Arm to ensure a chance to opt for an Aircrew position?

Hopefully these questions aren't too difficult to answer, but this would give me a better understanding in what area to choose.

Regards

if your main interest is too fly as a pilot then i would definitely join the navy as a pilot first because if you join the RM being a pilot is always going to be a secondary role, and you have to join as an officer to be a pilot in the RM, other ranks only opt to be door gunner i believe.
But also you do have to be a citizen for 3 years in the UK. Check out the navy/marine website, that will give you some firm answers!

Thanks for the info! Yea I don't exactly know which path to follow, anyways I have a long time to think about it.

Hopefully I'll be moving to the UK within 2 years, but bollocks, waiting 3 years in the UK is going to be a bitch.

Haha, course not. Just don't like waiting in general.

I'm going to give a call to the Careers Hotline and see what they have to say.

I have a father who's lived in Scotland for 6 years now.

My mother and step-father own a flat in Edinburgh Scotland.

Dunno if this will have any affect, but I'd like to hope so :)

Okay well I have a question:

My situation is as follows:
My farther was born and bread in england. And then later in life he moved out and I was born a few years later. we then moved to new zealand where I am living now. I am a new zealand citizen and thru my farther I have the ability to get a british passport and everything that goes with it.

So my question is would I still have to live in the UK for 3 years or do I already count because of my farther?

Oh and I dont mean to jack your thread mate, just thought someone viewing this might know :)

Aslong as you can get a British Passport then you should be eligable to join the Armed Forces.

I just spoke to a former Royal Navy Helicopter Pilot, and he told me this:

He said that if I wanted to be a pilot I should join the Royal Navy Directly, and not go through the Royal Marines. This was because they tend to try and make you go in the direction they want you to so they can fill the empty slots.

Is it possible to join the Royal Marine Commando, and chose a specialisation course as a Pilot? This would mean I could experience the soldiering part, and then move on to becoming a Pilot. Or is this not something to bet on?

Should I just join the Royal Navy to enter as a pilot?
(I'd love to experience some physical challenges like the Royal Marines, but also to fly)

And if I join the RN Fleet Air Arm, will I experience a physically demanding course such as soldiering?

Thanks so much for your time!

you could join as a pilot and then try to the All Arms Commando Course (9 week course to get a green beret outside of RMC).

Although i'm not sure if you can just ask and get put on to it, I think it's dependant on what roles need filling.

however i may be wrong.

Thanks for the info.

I just called a Navy Enquires, and they said I cannot join the RM and then go onto be a Pilot in the RN, as it makes sense since they invest in 100,000s of pound in training to be a RM and then suddenly change to be join the Royal Army.

Another bummer is that fact that I am a resident of Qatar which is in the middle east, and this country doesn't comply with UK security bla bla bla so I can't manage to get into the Armed forces without living in the UK or a complying country for three years.

There is a way around it, but yea. He said that I should call back after finish my AS levels, because I have a high chance of generating 140 UCAS points since I've chosen 4 A levels.
