Joining the military...

Post by Irishlad »

Hey everyone, I found this site about a week ago and decided to join today as i have a few questions to ask ye a few questions. First of all, let me say that i posted this in all sections(raf paras etc..) as im not sure of which branch i want to join...

I always wanted to join the military(army in particular) and have got information sent to me from recruiters in the north regarding the BA and also i have applied for the Irish defence forces. Unfortunately a week or two before by interview the DOD decided due to budget cuts they werent recruiting for the foreseeable future(2010 estimated). This may have been a blessing in disguise as I wanted a more active soldering career which I may not have got with the Irish army as they are not in conflict zones and generally only do peace keeping or peace enforcement missions(not that these arent dangerous or people dont get hurt).

My questions
1. How long is the training?
2.What is the fitness needed(pullups, pushups, time running etc)
3.What is basic training like
4.What is basic pay when qualified and is their a pay increase when stationed outside of the uk(germany, afghanistan etc.)
5.Is there much travel oppurtunities?
6.How much holidays do you get a year...Do these have to be used in blocks i.e. 2 weeks together or take maybe a monday and tuesday off if i decide to go back to Ireland for a few days?
7.What is the generall attitude to Irish recruits?

If I have anymore questions i will edit this or create a new post.....

Thanks in advance

Hi Irishlad,

Most of your questions can be answered by going to the official MoD sites. There are links to all these sites at the bottom of this page.

For a more personal touch, try using the search feature at the top of the page. You will gain information from some members who are currently in or have recently completed recruit training and have posted on this site.

That said, here are my answers specific to the Royal Marines, they may not be current:

1. How long is the training? - Approximately 32 weeks (leave periods during that time don't count).

2. What is the fitness needed (pullups, pushups, time running etc)? - Royal Marines are generally fit, but they're not all super fit. General all round fitness will help. Determination and attitude are as important if not more so. The fitness standards will be specified by the recruiters. http://www.royalmarines.mod.uk/server/show/nav.6827

3. What is basic training like? - I did mine in 1979 and enjoyed it for the most part. Your attitude and the quality of your training team will be major factors. http://www.royalmarines.mod.uk/server/show/nav.6828

4. What is basic pay when qualified and is there a pay increase when stationed outside of the UK (Germany, Afghanistan etc)? - http://www.royalmarines.mod.uk/server/show/nav.6902 There are usually allowances for overseas and operational tours.

5. Is there much travel oppurtunities? - Depends on what branch of HM Forces you decide to join, but generally the answer is a big yes.

6. How much holidays do you get a year...Do these have to be used in blocks i.e. 2 weeks together or take maybe a monday and tuesday off if i decide to go back to Ireland for a few days? - Depends on what branch you decide to join. Royal Marines in units usually get block leave (Christmas, Easter and Summer). These are usually suspended during Ops and taken at the end of the tour. There is some flexibility for taking leave outside the block system.

7. What is the generall attitude to Irish recruits? - I met many RMs from both sides of the Irish border in my time. I don't recall anyone having a problem with them because of their accent/nationality.

Maybe post in one part of the site instead of 5 different places. O.W.K nailed it on the head.

http://britisharmy.ehosts.net/

ask some questions there, punctuation and English is a must, these people have been known to close chat links to people talking rubbish and wasting time.

Thanks very much..very helpful..and to the other poster the reason i posted in the different sections was because im not sure exactly which branch i wanted to join so i said id ask in all as i imagine that they would all have different pay, time off, training etc
