I'm a South African, about to join the Royal Navy.
Was just wondering, are there a lot of Saffa matelots, or will I be very much in the minority? Going in as a clearance diver.
What's the general impression of us? Chance-taking journeymen, or valuable contributors? Heard of alot of us scum in the Army (Paras mainly) and they seem to be gelling fine. I won't be put off either way, looking to make the most of an awesome opportunity, but am just curious...

I know 2 female's serving in the RN who are from S.A and also a few RM's. Only problem would be a dual passport, however, you should visit http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/server/show/nav.4329, you will find the contact detials for the RN for further questions.

Am a bit of the way into my application, got a UK and SA passport, and this hasn't been a problem.
SA gov't is trying to stop its citizens joining foreign militaries, but UK Foreign & Commonwealth office has appealed this saying it's the historic right of Commonweath members to serve in HM Forces. Still waiting on the outcome of the appeal though. All this came about as a result of the failed coup that Thatcher's son was involved in.
If necessary, I'll renounce my SA citizenship. Not gonna let details like that stop me...

I was chatting to a South African bootneck only the other day, he is at CDT with me.. Apparently he is having snags now because of this new rule and will be considered a mercenary if its not sorted for him.. Will find out more about it was a little shit canned when he was telling me but will get back to you next weekend with a more comprehensive answer..
