Ah OM, lovely job that is! You will be tasked off to do the ship's cleaning, maitenance aka painitng, chipping, sweeping, mopping, waxing the decks.
It ain't all galm with radar's/sonar's and things that make funny beeps followed by some one blowing a whistle and screaming out funny words.
It is a good job but be prepared on board, lack of sleep and constant moaning from the Buffer. EW's seem to have the better side of the job, AW's are great for the outdoors type with the guns and Sonar,w ell if you don't mind missing your breakkie for SOC's at 07:45sm, crack on!
I don't know if they are still doing topmast but it seems to be easier in the Warfare branch than it was a few yrs back. You have the chance of gaining NVQ's in your trade. Your job role will boil down to this;
* Bosun's mate
* RF/DF parties (run around the ship after intruders with your rifle)
* Fire fighter ( You can be selected for BA attack, which is usually the opposite fire fighter role with the BM's).
At sea you will be elected for Bosun's mate at sea or op's room, you will not do both. SOme ships work that if you are a regular BM's along side then you would be whilst at sea, this can be a cushdy job as long as your QM ain't an arse hole).
Op's room watches, on a normal cruise watch you will do watches of 4hrs a turn, each day changing, so you will be up at all hours, sleep will be mucked up and I can promise it will push you for your first time. However, they forget to mention this during any of your training.
Good point is pay, you usually get more time off along side and the sunning is the advantage.
All the above may sound shitty but it is the truth, however, if you get along with your oppo's you will be fine. Usual method of an OM is to doss of work and have the buffer chase you around the ship!
P.S. Don't get caught in the mess when it ain't scran or stand easys!

Kinnel, where do I sign
Adive, once onboard try to complete your OM2's task book as soon as you can but not too early. Alot of people do and will rip into you for not spending enough time onboard, I don't mean been and gone within a year, I mean been and gone within 3 months, only 1) people get jealous 2) sea time is low.
On another note, becoming an OM1 gives you a better oppotunity aka get out claus for jobs lol

Of course it won't! Intelligence says if it did, they'd still be more undermanned than they are alreadyseaserpent wrote:So basically ive signed up to wax the deck, and run around a ship after imaginary intruders?? It never said that on the RN website

Seaserpent I was also an OM but on boats (submarines) cant speak for skimmers (surface fleet) but much of what Jo Jo said sounds about right.
Scrubbing out - Do you love the smell of flash in the morning? Don't worry mate all junior rates have to do cleaning of some form or another, the wardroom w*nkers reckon its good for morale.
I'm in love with a three badge stoker hmmm
