John Terraine's book has become something of classic, but there's been a lot more original research on the subject since its original publication. Terence Zuber's The Mons Myth takes a very critical view of the BEF in August 1914. In my view he goes too far but he makes some good points. See a revie...

Any German raid on Seaton in 1942 must lie in the realms of fantasy, I'm afraid. During the early part of the war, the holiday camp there was used as an internment camp to hold European refugees - maybe the rumour came from there. The holiday camp's still in Seaton.

Heavy artilley

No absolutely sure what it is, though it definitely isn't the WWI Paris gun - used by the Germans to shell Paris in 1918. I think it is the massive 80cm Schwerer Gustav used to bombard Sevastopol in 1942 - it was similar to the 'Dora' super-heavy gun.
