Danielchristopherlee wrote: One detail from the youtube link had me thinking. Apparently Hassler and Sparks had more luck escaping because Hassler spoke fluent French. I wondered if there had been any other RM Commando's at the time who also spoke French and whether it would have been wiser to choose them for the mission.

Daniel, if you think back to that era, probably the only ones who spoke French Fluently would be the Officers and there was no way they could or would use a lot more Officers for the mission.

I have just heard about a book that has just been published called , Cockleshell Heroes - The Final Witness. Its been on Scottish Tv news channel and I happened to see it mentioned in a big piece in the TELEGRAPH newspaper.

<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstop ... -last.html>

Apparently the 1st Sea Lord has written a foreword for this book.

... it seems that the author has uncovered a lot of new and untold information about the Frankton Raid ( Cockleshell Heroes). After 68 years its hard to believe ... I understand each of the men are featured Scottish TV showed just the two from Glasgow but lots also about all the others. .. I will report back with details
T :onfire:

Hello Daniel,

Good to see you are still around and as Wholley says,hope you will stick around.
As was mentioned on another thread recently what has been lacking are threads with substance.
This thread has been excellent mainly due to your input.

With regards to the latest book on the subject the author is one Quentin Rees.
This link will give you some sort of background to him.

From page eight it tends to refer to Operation Frankton. :D

Needless to say I have my own views.

Heyup Jim,are we going to liven this lot up again?? I was at TTCRM when the film was made,and a bloody nuisance they made of themselves.They all used the Shell House pub,just down from the barracks,ugly lot of bassas as I remember,especially the women.Saw old Bill Sparks often during that period.
