The maximum recruitment age for the Army is being raised from 26 to 33.
The Ministry of Defence said that would bring the limit into line with the other services.
It was revealed before Christmas that soldiers would be allowed to serve until they are 55 from next year.
The moves come against a background of problems in maintaining numbers in the Army.
A few days ago it emerged that the Government increased spending on Army recruitment by £3.6million in 2005/6 but failed to increase the number of soldiers.
Despite record amounts of money being spent on trying to attract new recruits, fewer people signed up than quit.
Figures revealed in a written parliamentary answer by Defence Minister Derek Twigg showed that recruitment spending rose from £85.4million in 2004/5 to £89million in 2005/6.
The number of new recruits rose from 11,720 in 2005 to 12,730 in 2006.
But separate figures from the Defence Analytical Support Agency showed that 14,460 people quit the army in the year to June 2006, leading the Tories to claim there was a "retention crisis''.
An MoD spokeswoman said raising the maximum recruitment age brought the Army into line with the rest of the services.
She added: "We face challenges in achieving and maintaining full manning, and shortages in specific areas, for example, medics, but we are trying hard to resolve them.''

I trust that the Army's maximum recruiting age will be raised again as soon as the MOD find out that they've made a mistake!RN website wrote:The age limits for each branch are quoted on the relevant job page. Rating/ Other Rank recruits must be within this age limit on the day of entry to HMS Raleigh/ CTC RM Lympstone, including the following birthday. For example, recruits can join most branches between the ages of 16 and 36, including the 37th birthday. Officer entrants must be within the quoted age limit on the first day of the month of entry to Britannia Royal Naval College/ CTC RM Lympstone. The latest entry for the RNR is generally before your 40th birthday although ex-RN applications will be considered up to the age of 45.
n.b. The Armed Forces (with the exception of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary) have a complete exemption, in terms of maintaining operational (combat) effectiveness, from the provisions of the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006.
