RAF Regiment disbanded?

Post by scottishcammy »

Whilst researching the Regiment, I came across this:

On 12 July 2004, it was announced by Geoff Hoon that the RAF Regiment will relinquish the Ground-Based Air Defence role as the threat from air attack had diminished. This role will now only be carried out by the Royal Artillery, and the four RAF Regiment squadrons will be disbanded by 1 April 2008. The four squadrons to be disbanded are:
*15 Squadron (March 2008)
*16 Squadron (March 2007)
*26 Squadron (March 2008)
*37 Squadron (March 2006)

As I'm considering joining one of the auxilliary squadrons as a gunner, I'm a bit concerned they may be phased out. Can anyone advise?
Cheers.
Cheers, Cammy.

Sure....Dont join them! Join the Paras instead. You get to serve with the most experienced soldiers in the armed forces, deploy on Ops to warzones like afghanistan where soldiers are seeing action almost every day, when in the UK you are ready to deploy on Airborne Task Force anywhere in the world in 72 hours, you get to work with the most dedicated and proffesional people around and you will make mates for life.

Why waste all of that so you can stag on an airfield?

You know it makes sense. 8)

Like a twat, I've discovered more info since posting that. It appears it's merely the rapier squadrons that are being fazed out, as opposed to the 'infantry' type ground defence (which is the bit I'm interested in) so no dramas! If I'm wrong, someone please jump in and correct me.

Paratrooper.....I like your style....!
Cheers, Cammy.

If you like stagging on so much, im sure if you arrived in a Parachute battalion we could arrange for you to do some extra shifts in the guardroom. Now that WOULD be fun!

Paratrooper, as much as I would love to, I'm too old now :( The RAF boys have a much higher age limit. But, again, I like your style mate! My brother has done some work with the reserve boys out in Iraq and was impressed.
Cheers, Cammy.

Cammy, you don't want to listen to someone who knows nothing about the RAF Regiment, i doubt very much that Paratrooper01 has ever worked with them. The Regiments role on Afghanistan and Iraq is that as any other Infantry unit, aswell as the security of Airfields. The Regiments role has been very flexible over the years, not just "stag on" as PT01 puts it.

re "auggies" i would say give it a go m8
you probably would be attached either to a force protection wing
or attached to a field sqn for a tour somewhere hot :D
i believe most regular sqn;s have auggies attached to bolster numbers
get onto google and give your local sqn a ring

aha thanks for clearing that up
i spose most units rely on "auggies" to bolster numbers
theres even lads at work getting letters
saying "fancy a six month tour "
you can imagine the reaction !!
