PTSD – You are not Alone

Post by Zero_Higher »

Hi all,

Just a simple message with a simple point. You are not alone when it comes to dealing with PTSD. Any thoughts you may be struggling with post tour are a normal reaction to an abnormal event. Here at military forums we have a vast array of members with experiences right across HM forces. Please take a moment to identify who our "listeners" are and feel free to get in touch. Alternatively feel free to PM any of us moderators and we can try our very best to help advise you on the vast resources out there.

Seeking help and advice is not a sign a weakness, it is a sign of strength as it better equips you with the mental kit to carry on. The charity Combat Stress said today it had received 358 new Afghanistan veteran referrals in 2013, a 57% rise on the 228 in 2012.

The charity, currently supporting more than 660 Afghanistan veterans, said the issue would become heightened as UK forces prepared to leave the country.

The government said it had invested £7.4m in mental health services.

Combat Stress said it had found that veterans generally waited an average of 13 years after serving before they sought help, but this had fallen to an average of 18 months for Afghanistan veterans.

If you have mild symptoms of PTSD, or you have had symptoms for less than four weeks, an approach called watchful waiting may be recommended.
Watchful waiting involves carefully monitoring your symptoms to see whether they improve or get worse. It is sometimes recommended because 2 in every 3 people who develop problems after a traumatic experience will get better without treatment within a few weeks.
If watchful waiting is recommended, you should make an MO/GP appointment within one month.

Remember you are not alone and we here at Military forums take helping our members serious.

Zero.
