UKSF Scenario Question????

Post by wllcr »

I am just reading and researching and finding out stuff...because knowledge is power.

So anyways.. i am reading a bit about 4 Para/ RMR reserve and UKSF reserve and it seems like these guys have to put in a crazy amount of commitment.

So i wonder if say in theory i was in UKSF reserve ....what kind of jobs would i do in civvy land. I can hardly imagine doing a proper full time job???

I am looking to see what other people think, and even better if these people actually know examples of the answer.

p.s i am never gonna argue with any part time staff ever again... you never know .. they may just be a bit more than u expect.

At one point i had 3 jobs to juggle - including my commitment to 4 Para. It was hard work, but I coped. Most of the blokes were similar to me -grafters. I dont know if its the training that instills it into you or wether over the period of the training that whats left is the type of person that works hard over everything. Training wise if you dont have the motivation and willingness to drag yourself out there day in day out after a day at work - then you wont succeed. In some ways its as hard as most regular units as your preparation is down to you in your own time, from what you eat/drink to how you train.

Hiya
Just joined the site but can help you with this question regarding occupations of guys in UKSF reserve. There is a complete mixed bag of occupations as you would expect, teachers, builders, dentisits, doctors postmen you name it, fair few students as well.
You get more out of it obviously if you have more time to commit, teachers and doctors might switch to temp stuff, self employment is a bonus and the students can normally wangle a fair bit of time. Other guys do do just the bare minimum training days which will be more than is expected by a regular ta unit. Some guys will take all the training and deployments going and sign on / labour do whatever in between.
I've been out a while but as I understand it you are highly likely to be expected (required) to deploy on completion of training now. Not doing so due to work commitments might not be a good start.
Having said all that in the first instance just worry about meeting the selection weekends / weeks to start with you can worry about the rest of it if you get in ;-)

I met a guy in 23SAS who was a teacher and said he was struggling to commit seriously, and wasn't that happy.

Very tough depending on your profession.

Personally I would apply for fulltime providing you have the past military experience, because it just takes a hell of a lot of time.

But that doesn't mean it's not possible! Don't get put off!

in afghan we had a barrister from 4 para who specialised in mental health cases he found it hard out on tour as he wasnt youre typical "squaddie" would probably been better off in the officers mess with all the other silver spoons but in 3 para rifle coy he was just treated the same as all the other new blokes :D :D :D i have spoken to him since and he says he would never do it again as he never felt as one of the "gang" just some thing to bear in mind that ta blokes are not all the same mentality as regular blokes u dont go thru depot and just havent really lived the life of a proper squaddie plus you get extra time on p coy     :D :D

Having been in the regular forces too (albeit a different unit) I would agree entirely with ninja's comment. you have to have a mindset where you can fit in and get on with all sorts of characters. From the chilled out and calm to the nasty p*ss takers who want to wind you up n up n up :D . Yeah 4 Paras selection aint as intense as the regulars. Being part timers its never will be. Dont let that kid you that its easy though. You will be doing it straight from 2 weeks of thrashings on a CIC run by regular staff. If memory serves me right only thing 4Para dont do is the 20miler but that didnt phase me as tabbing was my strongpoint. In fact im just back from a 21 miler full kit over the yorkshire dales and i p*ssed it and Im an old duffer now! Cant speak for lads in 4 para now but when I was in, myself and my mates were always wanting to do what the regulars had to do time wise. But I stick to my original comment, fitness wise if you dont put in the effort every day you wont last the cadre let alone be allowed to go on to CIC and you can forget surviving P-company.
