Joining the TA in Gloucester and Pay conditions

Post by COMBAT WARRIOR »

Please could someone give me abit of advice.
I started training with the Royal Marines Reserves back in June 08 I enjoyed it very much but due to the unit being so far away from my home (1hours drive each way if no traffic!) it was started to take its toll in time and money (nearly £100 in fuel each month).

When talking to my fiance she told me why not try the Local TA centre in Gloucester?

Although I enjoyed the Royal Marines very much I found it increasingly harder to get down there due to work commitments and travelling.

As the TA centre in Gloucester is only less than 15 mins from my house this has now become a serious option as my main reason for joining armed forces is to serve my country (Wish I could be Full-Time but can't)

I was wondering if anyone could give me an insight into joining and training standards within the TA. Also whilst training with RMR they told me that if I was sent out on tour I would get my civvy wage but also my marine wage on top. Is this the same in the TA? (as I am a self employed worker)

I've been told that they train on a tues night so am going along tomorrow to find out abit more about it.

If I do like it which I think I will what is the process to join
(i.e tests fitness interviews medical etc?)

Please any info much appreciated
IF YOU FIND YOU CAN'T TAKE THE PAIN THEN WRAP AND GET A NICE WARM OFFICE JOB YOU PANSY.

I guess It's the MOD, a lot of specialist on op's like surgeons, Dr's and people like that are TA and earn a lot In civi street. In my cases we are talking a couple of extra grand top up, but I did meet a lawyer In Iraq who was with a armour unit who claimed he was on £100,000 and the Army matched It.

To me that sounds a little extreme and I would guess (well I know from having friends In the regs) that It must p!ss the regs off.

From what I have heard at my unit, your pay is increased to whatever your 'standard' wage is in your civvy job. I say 'standard' and by that I mean your salary BEFORE any bonus you may usually earn, as these will NOT be paid.

This is particulary important to those who are self employed and own their own company and decide to 'legally' play with the taxman so to speak. In the past some have come unstuck by paying themsleves a low salary to avoid a loss in tax, which they usually bump up with paying themsleves a large bonus. However, when called up it is only the salary that they would get paid and hence their earnings will not be as high as usual.

As for those whose pay gets bumped up, regardless of how high, it has to be done. Those on high wages will have high outgoings, big morgages etc which they still have to pay, and simply couldn't without their usual income. You simply would not have any surgeons or doctors signing up, if being called up meant a massive drop in salary and massive financial difficultyfor them.

Haribo,

Yes, your wage is only bumped up to your salary if you are called up for any period of time that takes you away from your civvy job. This does not include annual camps or courses that reservists will take, they will be paid at the same rate as your rank and the time off from your job will be taken as either unpaid or paid leave. Some companies/sectors are financially more supportive than others, some are not particulary helpfull with finance or time, as is mine, due to the nature of their industry.

For a VERY general example a civilian engineer who works for say BA, earns £80'000 per year will join the TA at the rank of Private after basic training. For weekends and continous training periods (10 day or more), usually anual camps, he will be paid the equivalent rate of his rank on a part time basis as this does not affect his usual salary and so there is not 'bump up' on his TA pay. However, if he were to be called up for FTRS (full time reserve service) and for a year his civilian salary of £80'000 was to be ceased, he would not be forced to drop his wage to the £16'000 or so that he would earn as a private in the Army, as of course this is a massive decrease in income. Who exactly pays the extra i am not sure, I would assume it will be the government in some form other than the MOD expenditure. Of course there are loads of details and effecting factors so the above is very general, but this is what I have understood from what I have been told at my unit and by those who have done it.

Combat Warrior,

I am or may soon be in a similar position as yourself. Out of interest how far did you get with the RMR? I started phase 1 in March 08, 108 troop but failed my confirmation weekend. I take it your Det was Dorset House? PM me as I live in Cheltenham and may be considering other options as after being made redundant just after xmas I have found it impossible to get on the RMR weekends due to my new job being s****.

I dont anticipate the T.A being any easier with the time constraints to be honest but given that its Gloucester it may help somewhat. I think when im a little more settled with my current employment/career path I will have a look at things and see what my best options are. If you could let me know what you think about the differences(ease of location/commitments) once you've been to a Info night that would be great.
