Hello

Post by Flintstone »

I would firstly like to introduce myself to everyone on this forum and also thank everyone for the useful and very helpful information they share. I am in the process of joining the parachute regiment and can honestly say this is the best source of information available on the net.
Got my pre ADSC on the 5th, and i'm not particularly concerned over it as i'm fairly certain i'm hitting the required runtime and desired press ups per 2 min. Just very impatient atm as i'm waiting and waiting to get stuck in. When can I realistically expect to get my interview? and my adsc and prac after that? are we talking weeks or months in between?

Don't have any other questions at this time because most people have given decent responses to questions asked but I dare say i'll have some in the near future.

Hello, welcome to the Forum.
Your best bet is to ask your contact at the AFCO.
Good luck and train hard 8)

Hey, just an update. Did my pre adsc selection today and wow....I'm disappointed with myself. Got there, did heaves and jerry can walk and then went onto my 1.5 mile run. By the point of me leaving the gym I was already tired so I did my run in a pathetic 10 min 25 seconds. As you can imagine, im not very happy with my level of fitness and I need to really focus more on running. Iv never been a particularly strong runner but I hear Fartlek is a good solution to my problem, just wanted to share this link with you guys incase any other people are finding it difficult.

Another update guys!

Iv been running alot recently using the link above and iv managed to get my runtime way down! Did my interview yesterday and passed, so now I have my 2nd interview booked for next thursday. Still a bit nervous but my recruiter assured me that providing I add a bit more content to my icebreaker I should be going for an A grade at interview. Providing I pass my 2 physicals aswell, I should be on the 6th March intake which is sooner than I imagined!!

Just a question if anyone is about....But is it true that as a para recruit I may not get to do my jumps? :S

Cheers

Get that maroon lid earnt before you worry about passing your jumps course. In my opinion the parachute role of the regiment will not be phased out. you may have to wait longer for course availability etc but ultimately IF you pass p-coy you WILL be off to Brize.

Hmmm.... It might upset some (and as I'm on the Para's Joining thread I may be going a step too far in voicing unpalatable thoughts), but I'm not ENTIRELY convinced about the long term future for a 'parachute' deployable strike force in the current climate of financial slash and burn by the Government... Much the same as heavy armour is being shrunk from Cold War threat levels, I think the days of guys jumping out slow lumbering transport planes in the mid of night, into hostile territory and accepting that 3-5% may be injured in the process of coming back into contact with terra firma, are long gone...

The Army website states the following under Para Regt tab:
The Future
These special capabilities are demanded more than ever in an evolving operational environment where complexity, ambiguity and confusion abound. The requirement for speedy, preventive deployments is still paramount, where airborne soldiers may have to operate at the limits of endurance and sustainability. They must be light and agile, ready to deploy at short notice, inherently self-reliant and innovative, with the skill at arms, cunning and boldness to bring all their firepower to bear. They have to be a highly disciplined and professionally competent force, deployable by helicopter, aeroplane or parachute. Attaining this professional standard requires motivated volunteers whose qualities are above the norm. In sustaining the specialised capability that remains the hallmark of the Parachute Regiment, appropriate selection and training is as critical now as it ever was.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the above blurb.. apart from the 'or parachute' bit... There's a need for elite teeth arms, be it Para, RM ......... erm...or RAF Regt .... ...[pause]....(guffaw....)

It's just that I don't see these highly trained Para Regt bods ever having to jump out of a plane and dangle from parachute to achieve military success.

Patrol forward to contact? yep! no probs...
Heli lift insertion? yep! No probs...
Hot Parachute drop? (wot?! Without 'enemy' either shooting down said transport planes or having the technology to track and anticipate where a drop would be and prepare a warm welcome?) No chance...

Still... just a thought...
