I'm not a pilot but I do spend a large part of my working day sitting two feet behind two of them, so may I clear up a couple of your misconceptions. There are no extra qualifications required for fast jet pilots and similarly the arm/leg measurement limits apply to all pilot applicants. All pilots ...

Your questions are far too generalised. "Advice on the role of a WSOp" could go on for days. Get the general stuff from other sources or by looking at old threads on here, then ask more specific questions and people will be happy to help. "Are the tests hard to pass?" The tests a...

Riiiight, can't fault your logic Harry but it's remedial reading for you I'm afraid.
I suspect that like Killingo the difference between ' and " has passed you by.

Absolute rubbish, at least half the pilots on my squadron are over six feet tall. (I assume that's what you meant killingo, as I can assure you that 100% of them are more than 6" tall)

This accident appears to be the basis of one of those bizzare UFO conspiracy theories. Apparently the mountain was sealed off after the accident (unsurprisingly, as Harriers contain some very unhealthy carbon fibre substances) and the tinfoil hat wearers assumed that this was to conceal a crashed sp...

12th Feb 1982, An RAF Harrier GR3 airframe number XZ973. A student from the OCU at Wittering on a solo nav sortie crashed into high ground 8 miles south of Corwen. Put 'DASC' (Defence Aviation Safety Centre)into google and all the Military Air Accident Summaries are available on their website. Incid...

"RMs have had Sgt pilots since they first had helicopters" Actually I think GOTW may be right here, I believe the RM NCO pilot route was closed about five or six years ago at about the time the junglie crewman job was opened up to the RM. I could be wrong but I think its officer pilots onl...

Danny, If it is just the rank thing that is concerning you then I don't think you have too much to worry about. Before the Air Force will give you that rank you will have been selected at OASC for the required qualities and trained at Cranwell as to what is expected of you. You will then spend at le...

I didn't post a reply to this initially because it is nearly ten years since I did NCAITC (or AAITC as it then was), and there used to be people on this site who have done it in the last year or so. I know that the course has changed a lot since I did it but as you havent got any useful replies exce...

55 Sqn is responsible for NCA training at cranwell. This includes NCAITC and the WSOp generic course. If by hangar training you mean the OASC practical testing, that is done by other people who live across the road from 55 Sqn.

Yes, you can wear glasses and be a WSOp provided that your unaided vision is not too bad (no worse than 6/24 I think) and that your glasses correct your vision to 6/6 (ie normal vision as stated above). The eyesight standards are there because you require that standard of vision to achieve the tasks...

Its not quite as simple as just getting your tax back. It will be a tax free payment of £2240 for a six month tour regardless of rank and therefore of how much tax you pay. If you earn less than about £22k this is a better deal than a simple refund of tax, if you earn more than that, it is not as go...
